Cutting Corners: FREE vs TRIAL...is either really FREE?

Free vs. Trial…which is really Free?

FREE! FREE! FREE! Every time I see that word it draws me in like a magnet. I can’t help it. I love to save! My motto is, “If it’s FREE, it’s for me!” But I have learned that free sometimes has a price, especially on the internet. I have had many hours stolen trying to get to a FREE deal, only to learn I have been duped. I now know a few warning signs. If a site starts off with a survey, and doesn’t display up front how many questions there are, rest assured it is endless. Worse, at the end of it, you will have to make a purchase or commit to a purchase in order get to the “free” item. Also, you generally have to supply your email address and personal information. And just how do you count the cost of spam? I am very protective of my personal email address since being bombarded with unsolicited spam after attempting to get to a “free” item online. I have since set up several email addresses to use specifically for online inquiries.

But it is not just on the internet. I have been bamboozled by TV and print as well. An infomercial that offered FREE computer training almost turned out to be a very expensive deal. They promised FREE training if I just paid the shipping and handling with my credit card. Luckily, when the package arrived, I read the paperwork inside before actually opening the software. It stated that if I was completely satisfied with the product, I would automatically be billed $79.99. I immediately called them and shipped it back before I was charged.

Another trap is the “Satisfaction Guaranteed” gimmick. I ordered exercise equipment, off a TV commercial, stating I had a 30 day free trial period, and my satisfaction was guaranteed. I assumed this meant the company was not going to bill my credit card for a full 30 days after I received the equipment to allow me to use it to be sure I was satisfied. The problem with this FREE TRIAL, however, was that the 30 day trial period started when I ordered the product, not when I received it. The commercial stated delivery would be 4-6 weeks. How convenient! I wouldn’t even have the equipment to test before I was billed. Luckily, I was able to call them and they advised to simply reject the item at the post office and they would not bill my credit card. Whew!

Lastly, I have found many store circulars to be confusing and borderline on misleading. Some display an item cost in the form of a mathematical equation. For example, item is regular $.99 - $.49 sale condition = $.50 total cost. The “sale condition” is that you must purchase 10 of that item in order to get the $.49 off each one, which is basically $5 off your order. I was not the only one confused by this. Several of my acquaintances were also a little unclear. You may have also seen this one - $2.99 sale price - $1 register reward = It’s like paying $1.99. The $1 is a coupon that will print on your receipt after you have made the purchase at full price. You can use this $1 off coupon the next time you visit toward any store purchase, making it “like” getting the $2.99 item for $1.99.

Don’t be taken. Read carefully and thoroughly. Ask customer service for details. But if you are at all unclear – don’t buy!

So in conclusion, neither FREE nor FREE Trial may actually be free. The old saying may be true - nothing in life is free.

Super Super Day!!

Started my morning off, speaking to a few students at Laurel Oaks, my alma mater. Just sharing with them that if they have a dream of starting their own business that they should just GO FOR IT and never give up!! I shared my TV interviews and talked about my attitude during school. I could tell by the looks of some of them that they were there just to get out of class to hang out with with their friends. There were 3 though that when asked if they wanted to start their own business raised their hands. One boy wants to open a restaurant, I encouraged him to try it and be sure to invite me to his grand opening! You could tell by the look on his face that my believing in him was just the boost he needed.

I had invited my senior class teacher, Mrs. Hribar Creed and she attended. She was so encouraging and excited to see what I had created. Also my English teacher, Miss Walker, from Laurel Oaks was there. She totally looked the same except that she has lost weight. She had the same bubbly personality and warm smile!!

I was SO excited too to see Mrs. Hale there. I had her for English one year at East Clinton and LOVED her!! She was one of my most favorite teachers. I remember baking her a cake on her last day to let her know she would be missed! For those of you in this area, she is the wife of the late beloved Dr. Hale.

It was a fun time! I am thinking of talking with the school about offereing an Entrepreneurship class again. I am even willing to teach it!! ; )

But the day just got better from there. My teacher, Mrs. Creed, dropped a bombshell on me after the presentation. She asked me about my father, whom I didn't know. My mother never shared with anyone who his true identy was before she passed away in a car accident when I was only 1 1/2 yrs old. Everyone assumed it was the guy she married but the marriage didn't work out. But Mrs. Creed told me that her husband is certain he knows the man who is my father!! I am going to email her today and see if I can arrange a meeting with her husband to get the 411. It is amazing to think I may have a father living close. The other man I have always thought was my father also died in a car accident when I was 16 but I had never met him.

Then if the day couldn't get any better. I packed the kids up and ventured over to Super Kmart in Hillsboro to grab some steals from their Super Double Coupon Sale!! Got some great stock to give away at my Boot Camps!! Was a little disappointed that some of their shelves were bare on things I wanted. They don't restock well but hopefully when I return on Thursday they will have restocked.

Thanks for reading!!

Today is a big day! I have my first Home Boot Camp! I am working on a plan to train trainers to create a great new home based business! I am having SO much fun teaching others how to save and LOVE when people stop me, like yesterday at church, to say they are "saving mad cash!" And I want others who share that passion to have the opportunity to help other families through teaching them how to save hundreds on their everyday shopping.

Please say a little prayer for safety as I travel, peace for my hubby (he is keeping both kids) and courage. THANKS!!!

From Missy G. ...if anyone buys Coke products, CVS is offering 4/13.00 but you get 3.00 in reward dollars back and Community Markets is offering a 1.00 off coupon on the last page of their ad that for Coke products, that CVS will accept because it is a manufacturers coupon. Total savings=4.00, total cost $9.00 for 4 12pks!!!!

From Becky R....hey Tara, just got back from Kmart. Thought the place would be swamped. not the case, then I figured out why.... they are really high on a lot of things, you really have to know your prices and shop smart. some of the good deals I found:................
lysol wipes 2.79 (1.00 m/c) oop .79/each
suave shamp 1.79 (1.00 m/c on 2) oop .79/each (note: there were some suaves that were 1.10, but the shelves were bare)

triscuits 2/5.00 (2.00 m/c on 2) oop .50/each
Excederin Extra strength 4.49 (2.00 m/c) ****note... this was for the 24 ct, shelf empty, asked clerk and she couldn't find any more stock.... so... I didn't get any!! bummer!!
Also, I was looking for the Pringles Mini's, they don't carry them. They only have the stix. They were $3.19.

Cereal there seemed really high. I found the large box of HN Cheerios at Save A Lot in Blan for $3.49
anyway.... hope this helps......have a great day...Beck.

Welcome!

Welcome! I am starting a new business. A training course I created myself called Coupon Boot Camps. I have been featured on 2 TV stations and popularity is growing so as I journery through this exciting process I thought other Mom's might gain inspiration and empathy for their adventures!! I have a wonderful husband who has a great career and Ph.D. (almost), 2 children under the age of 3 and a stepson almost 18 and so this business has to be done around them. This creates challenges and simple pleasures that I thought others may find amusing! So ... here goes!!
