FRUGAL GIFTING AND GIVING

In these tough economic times many of us have cut back, or completely cut out, our charitable donations and special occasion gift giving. Bestowing doesn’t need to be burdensome if you use these simple suggestions for penny wise giving.

These cost effective charitable contribution ideas will be welcomed by any organization:

Consider giving the coupons you are not using from your weekend newspaper to these non-profit organizations: FREE or discounted pet coupons - Humane Society; Formula and Diaper Coupons - Job and Family Services/WIC, local Women's Center, Homeless Shelter; Home Improvement coupons - Habitat For Humanity

Share your grocery excess from super sales or coupon buys with the local Homeless Shelter or Food Pantry.

Hold a Yard Sale to benefit a youth group.

Host a Clothing Carry In Open House. I love this one! Invite your friends to clean out their closets and dressers and bring their clean, gently used unwanted apparel to your home during specific hours. Separate it by size to make for easier sorting and then donate it to your local clothing thrift store or ministry.

Give the Gift of Yourself! Volunteer!!! Time is extremely valuable to every non-profit.

Donate your Box Tops for Education to your local school. The schools can redeem the Box Top coupons worth $.10 each toward equipment or supplies.

Recycle! Have you seen those green and yellow dumpster looking bins located throughout the community, such as the ones behind the Wilmington News Journal? These are part of the “Paper Retriever Program” in which non-profits, such as the Clinton County SkatePark, school organizations, etc receive money based on the amount of recycled paper products deposited.

Shop Locally!! Yes by supporting local businesses you are generating income and tax dollars that are vital for local charities.

Here are my favorite “out of the gift box” ideas for lavishing love on special occasions without breaking the bank. Gift Baskets or bags filled with candy, snacks, laundry supplies make great graduation gifts (of course, you'd buy all of that on sale and with a coupon!) Diaper coupons and/or diapers are perfect for baby showers.

Re-gift Gift Cards. This is no longer considered tacky, it’s frugal!

Airline Miles, products earned from credit or debit cards, and customer loyalty rewards are just a few trouble-free gift ideas that cost very little or nothing at all to pass along. My debit card earns rewards every dollar I spend which I redeem for gift cards, travel discounts or merchandise.

With some creative thinking you can give with out going broke!
